A finalist in the SXSW Web Awards

No, not this site but the redesign of Kettering Borough Councils website, which went live mid may, 2006. I’m pleased as punch, if not a little shocked, to be in the finals of the CSS category, which I quote:

Showcases sites that push the boundaries of CSS coding technology, bringing together top-notch design and content with standards compliant and accessible code.

The 10th Annual SXSW Web Awards uncover the best new websites and celebrate those who are building and implementing tomorrow’s online trends, well that’s what they say and who am I to argue?

This is something else, isn’t it?!

This means that I (or Jadu rather) receive two complimentary registrations to attend SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas. Although there’s not a hope in hell I can afford to go to the US and take up the offer.

Winners in all categories will be announced at the 10th Annual SXSW Web Awards Ceremony, presented by Adobe on Sunday 11th March.

Putting 2.7 billion in context: Mobile phone users

A completely fascinating article by Tomi T Ahonen, which is a must read for most. The article compares mobile technology with that of the car, the phone (land-line), the TV and other life / culture changing technology.

Some of his findings are startling but on reflection, not surprising.

More phones sold last year than the total installed base of personal computers in use. Out of the 950 phones sold last year, two in three had built-in cameras, 30% had MP3 players. Four out of five had colour screens. All 950 million could access the web (at least via WAP), and all 950 million could send and receive SMS text messages. Over two in three were high speed; while one in five phones sold last year was a 3G phone.

7 Habits of a Highly Successful Freelance Web Designer

Andy Budd discusses the 7 Habits of a Highly Successful Freelance Web Designer. All seven are important but not only for the freelances out there (or those who want to make the trip) but just as important, if not more so, for those of us who work within a company.

I worked a few years ago now for a large company designing and building web sites as though on a production line. Falling into the trap of clock-in - work - clock-out, leaving your interest in the pigeon-hole you work in with your passions faltering or completely doused by the powers is all to easy and in the end demoralising.

Applying Andy’s habits could well break you out. Either out the company altogether or more importantly out the box to make a real change to the giant you work for. Love what you do and never stop learning. Karma maintains if you show your work love…
